The general waste management regime, approved by Decree-Law no. 178/2006 of September 5, in the wording given by Decree-Law no. 73/2011, of June 17 (RGGR), transposes to the Directive 2008/98 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council, of November 19th, on waste.
This law applies to waste management operations aimed at preventing or reducing waste production, its harmful nature and the adverse impacts of its production and management, as well as reducing the impacts associated with the use of resources, in order to improve the efficiency of its use and the protection of the environment and human health by defining exclusions from its scope.
As a result of particular complexity or increasing quantitative and / or qualitative importance of some types of waste, designated by specific waste streams, particular attention was given to its management, through the creation of specific legislation, which introduced a responsibility for its management, on the various players in its life cycle.
